LSEM Services

Mixed_group-lr.jpgLegal Services of Eastern Missouri's (LSEM) mission is to provide high-quality civil legal assistance for low-income people in 21 counties in eastern Missouri. To fulfill this mission, LSEM has offered free legal advice, advocacy, and representation to the socially and economically vulnerable for more than 56 years. Legal services are most frequently provided in areas relating to domestic violence and other family law issues, children, education, health, housing and homelessness, public benefits, elder law, immigration, and consumer matters. LSEM is staffed with talented attorneys, paralegals, advocates, and social workers so that we can provide our clients with a "holistic approach" to solving their legal issues.

To help prevent problems and promote early identification and referral of existing legal problems, LSEM also publishes and distributes informational materials and conducts community outreach programs to educate the low-income community about their legal rights and responsibilities in a wide variety of civil legal areas.

Our services are designed to help remove the legal barriers that often prevent low-income families from overcoming poverty and violence, maintaining or obtaining independence, and achieving self-sufficiency. LSEM's staff, attorneys and advocates work closely with more than 150 social service agencies and participate in 36 collaborations and task forces to address systemic problems such as domestic violence and foreclosures.
