baby_boy_looking_at_stethiscope-lr.jpgLSEM's Medical-Legal Program (MLP), funded through a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health, is a unique medical-legal partnership involving LSEM, Affinia Healthcare, Family Care Health Centers and Saint Louis Integrated Health Network. MLP provides legal services to low-income families and individuals who receive health care at these St. Louis area health centers. MLP enables patients of these health care providers to receive legal assistance in a wide range of civil cases including public benefits, education, housing, guardianships, some family law and other matters. MLP consists of a project director/attorney, staff attorney and social worker together in providing holistic direct representation of clients in state and federal civil litigation and administrative hearings including advocacy on systemic issues adversely affecting the health of low-income families. A key component of the partnership is also engaging in the training of health care providers about legal issues that often affect the health of low-income families in order to work together on addressing the social determinants of health.
